Thursday Night Blue Max

New Game - Old Rules - New Group

A little introductory game of Blue Max for the new guys - 3 hours and two kills. Germans downed the two Allied pilots. For one kill each. Basically two games in 3 hours. Luke - Anthony and not pictured Stephen.

Then Couple of Saturdays ago I introduced (Henry) to the fun Blue Max / Canvas Eagles using the Canvas Eagles dice chart damage table with my 1/72 scale planes. I am afraid the germans did not fair as well this time - Escort quickly dispatched Observation plane escaped after observer wounded twice then finally killed. Untenable position withdrew to fight another day.

Henry has Wings of War planes so Labor day weekend we will try that rule set and use his planes with both sets of rules. Henry has his own version of events from the Allied perspective to be posted soon.

Returned from Scotland



Tima took me to the airport a year ago - and Well the Journey ended back on the 16th of June of 2011 - I missed a chance to see London its been a year since i went to Scotland Left special friends behind Saw two Castles and have a bucket list of places to see in the future. My Apartment building and my accomodations for the 4 months I was in Scotland

NAP: TARUTINO 18th OCTOBER 1812 (our Version)



This was a game based on the NAPOLEONIC BATTLE in RUSSIA: TARUTINO 18th OCTOBER 1812 (On a game played earlier in the month by my friends in Scotland link(s) here http://blenheimtoberlin.blogspot.com/p/nap-tarutino-18th-october-1812.html and here http://blenheimtoberlin.blogspot.com/2012/06/nap-tarutino-1812-game.html ) roughly on the Battle of Tarutino 18 October, 1812 played using Black Powder Rules. It was a surprise attack by the Russian Army on the vanguard of the French Army under Marshal Murat approx 65 miles south of Moscow. I based the OB on the troops I had available taking into account to some extent the proportions at the actual battle with the Russians having 2 more brigades and more artillery. What followed at his links are  notes on the troop ratings and BP rule changes, the player briefings, orders of battle and the scenario special rules.




Our Game developed a little differently as Andy deployed his French in typical "British" style of defense his walled manor hous absorbed the French assault much like Hugomont at Waterloo. (my thinking is that the walled manor for a Russian town should be reduced) But mistakes both in deployments and several key areas allowed the  Russian Surprise attack for three turns to falter without much success.


Battle was not finished in 4 hours due to redeployments and other delays in Scouting by Bavarian cavalry.

Black Powder: French vs Russians on Memorial Day Weekend

A week ago Saturday, I was able to get in a game of Black Powder at David's house. As usual, since I do not have any Napoleonic figures to speak of, we used his figures and terrain.

In the scenario, French and Russian forces were to meet and fight over a small town's water supply. Dave won initiative and began to march his French brigades on the field of battle:
David rolled really well for his activations, and was able to advance his infantry about 3/4 of the way across the table. In addition, his cavalry was able to move past the disputed town:
I rolled poorly (VERY VERY poorly) for my activations, and was barely able to get a couple of units on the field (we were deploying from off the table). Threatened by David's cavalry's quick advance, I ordered my units into squares to repel the horsemen:
Meanwhile, David had split off some light cavalry to occupy the town:
David rolled well for activations again, and was able to advance his infantry against my infantry. My troops were still in squares because of the threatening cavalry, and were caught in the wrong formation for taking on other infantry:
Though I took some casualties, the squares held, and I was able to bring on some additional infantry support on the next turn, rolling just well enough to advance and form a line of infantry:
David's cavalry, which had been dissuaded from charging my infantry, had no qualms about charging my much smaller cavalry unit. Knowing the end result would probably go against me, I nevertheless counter-charged!
While the cavalry units engaged, David continued to advance his infantry and some supporting artillery to face the Russian line:
In the town, David's cavalry unit dismounted, and held one end of the bridge that bisected the settlement:
I was bringing a column of infantry into the town from the opposite end, but they took a while to get where I needed them, especially because of my dice rolling problems. (Have I mentioned I was rolling poorly?)

Where the main thrust of the battle was taking place, I wheeled some of my infantry and fired into the flanks of David's troops:
Things were looking decent for me at the time, until David's cavalry, having seen off my own horse units, charged into the flank of my line. Formed into line as they were, since they were facing infantry, the cavalry charge proved decisive:
My units began to break, and my once well-formed line dissolved into individual units with gaps between them where the broken units had once stood (Cowards!):
But all was not lost! In the town, my plodding infantry finally came to grips with the small unit of horsemen holding the bridge:
After several rounds of a vicious melee, my Russian infantry finally chased off the pesky cavaliers, and occupied the town:
At the game's end, the Russians held a strong defensive position in the town, but the bulk of David's forces, having totally scattered their foes, was approaching and a fierce battle loomed:
Alas, time had run out. We called the game a pyrrhic victory for the Russians. Technically, I did hold the objective, which David had overlooked in his zealous attempt to smash my forces. But I can't argue with the fact that everywhere else on the field, my troops had taken a thrashing at the hands of the French!

David and Stephen finished the game the next day. I was unable to attend, but here's David's description of the outcome:

"The Russians continued to hold as the remnants of the defeated  Russian brigade returned to the battlefield along with a reconstituted brigade of 2 cavalry regiments with horse artillery - this was just enough to hold off the renewed French attack as the French Polish brigade was forced into square and one disordered square finally broke as the Hussar cavalry assaulting it retired after a simultaneous break test. Fresh French reinforcements of 5 battalions made no headway in attempting to break into the village from the south eastern corner. French forces will have seek fresh water further downstream. The French cavalry Polish Horse artillery battery was crushed after 3 rounds of melee as the artillery vainly struggled to hold on to the battery."

So, another game of Black Powder under my belt.I must say, they are very different rules to what I am used to, since I am not a Napoleonic gamer. There are things about the rules that I like, and others that cause my grief. I think perhaps some of my difficulties stem from the fact that I am not familiar with Napoleonic strategy and that definitely has an impact on how I play the game. I am keeping an open mind, however, and want to get in a couple more games before I make up my mind about the rules. Of course, I will report back here and tell you all about it.

Bob Moon in Nashville - NashCon 40mm FIW

Raid on St. Francis
After years of putting up with raids on the small farms and settlements of upstate New York, the British have decided to chastise the Indians by attacking their base at St. Francis. Robert Rodgers and his Rangers, aided by Provincial and Local Militia, set forth to try to punish the Indians for their past misdeeds and hopefully deal a heavy blow to French influence in the area. Join the defenders of St. Francis and help protect it from the wrath of the British or gather up your powder and shot and attempt to give your King his retribution! Bob Moon, sponsored by the Jacksonville Garrison and Sash & Saber, brings us this French & Indian War scenario in 40mm using the F&IW variant of “Brother Against Brother”. There will be room for 7 players. Children under 16 must be accompanied by playing adult. An MVP trophy will be awarded.

Napoleonics 2012 Memorial Day NashCon Scenario

Valle de la Muerte
Canto de Furlong separates the Lago de Langford plains to the southwest from the Valle de la Muerte to the north. French forces are encamped around Amargo Fuente, the only water source for miles, to observe the pass between Canto de Furlong and La Ballena Negro. The Spanish provincial forces in La Ballena Negro must clear the pass and unite with the British in Canto de Furlong at all costs. The French force, with its advantage of a central position, plans to prevent the unification of the enemy and deny them the victory. Mark Johnson presents this Peninsular War battle using 25mm figures and “Bonaparte” rules. There will be openings for up to 6 players.

As Henry and I were unable to attend NashCon this weekend - we took Mark Johnson's scenario and amended it to use just two Brigades of French chosen by a random die roll  (1 infantry brigade 4 battalions 2 battalion guns and 1 cavalry brigade with 3 horse guns) and two Brigades of Russians chosen by a random die roll (Henry got a Grenadier Brigade with a attached regiment of Hussars and a Brigade of Russian infantry with an attached battery) all infantry was rated as steady with random unit counters scattered about the table. The obejective for both sides was to destroy the enemy but control the village de la Muertevich water supply as that main objective was important for victory conditions.

Henry will be cross posting - His Elite Brigade fought valiantly but was overwhelmed by sheer numbers of French and some lucky die rolls by the french commanders.  The French were nearly undone by overeaching and engaging the1st Russian Grenadier Brigade while using one lone regiment of German Light dragoons to dismount and hold the village. Henry's Other Russian Line Brigade fought hard and eventually pushed the German Light Dragoons out of the village. The Russians won a phyrric victory as they suffered watching one Brigade suffer over 50 percent casualties but its destruction lead to the Russian Brigade commander to win the goal of resupplying the division with water as the Russians held the town at the end of the game.

May 28th 2012 - Continuation of the village de la Muertevich water supply battle. Stephen came over to see if he could hold the village (at first we wondered if he had too few reinforcements but he used the light cavalry brigade with supporting horse artillery quite judicially as he kept the French bottled up with Russian counter squares!

Initial Russian victory for the first day will be tested as a second day of battle commences to see if the Russian Brigade can hold on too its gains from the day before. The French Brigades with one arriving brigade of reinforcements for both the russians and the french will be attempting to rip the the village de la Muertevich water supply from Russian hands-
